The heads of 17 local governments have challenged Governor Plateau's decision to suspend them

The decision of the state government to suspend them from their jobs has been contested by the heads of 17 local governments and all of Plateau state's councilors.

Caleb Mutfwang, the governor of Plateau State, supported the state house of assembly's decision to suspend the state's local government leaders in order to undertake an investigation into the receipt and usage of local government monies last week.

Miskom Alex Na'antwan, the chairman of the local government for Shendam in Plateau State and the head of the Association of Local Government Leaders, claimed during a press conference that despite receiving an invitation letter from the Legislative Council, they were unable to gather their information because the suspension letter had already been approved by the governor of the state.

Additionally, the state council members convened a press conference where they asserted that since they are also elected representatives, the governor lacks the authority to remove them from office.

The governor needs to reverse his decision, according to Hon. John Dashe, president of the Councilors Association in Plateau State, who is also a legal expert.

According to barrister Yakubu Sale Bawa, a private attorney in Jos, neither the governor nor the council are authorized by law to suspend the leaders of local governments.

While a source has previously stated that the government has listed the names of people it will hand to the acting leadership in the local governments, only the court will be able to decide this argument.
