When armed robbers attacked the Emir of Minna royal in Niger State on Tuesday, they shot and killed two royal guards.
A witness told Daily Trust that the guards were at Minna General Hospital getting care.
In response to the shocking event, Governor Mohammed Bago had wished the palace guard a speedy recovery.
But Niger's Police Commissioner, Mr. Ogundele Ayodeji, told reporters at a meeting of the G-7 States Technical Committee in Abuja on Wednesday that the guards had died.
He also said that early investigations showed that the robbers were part of a plot within the company and that they stole N3.3 million.
The police chief said that his men were already on the trail of the crooks and that he was sure they would be caught.
"At 3 p.m., while I was in Abuja for the G-7 Technical Committee Meeting, I got a call that there had been a robbery in front of the house of the Emir of Minna.
"From what I heard, the thieves followed the emirate's teller all the way to the palace's gate. As the cashier was about to enter the palace, the thieves shot randomly, killing two royal guards and stealing N3.3 million in the process.
"From what I've heard, it sounds like the crime was planned by people inside the company, and I'm sure the criminals will be caught sooner or later," he said.
He said that the G-7 platform, which is made up of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its six neighboring states, is "very strategic" for fighting cross-border crime among the member states.
He said that the security heads of the FCT, Benue, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau States made up the G-7 technical group.
Ayodeji said that the meeting had been overdue for a long time. He also said that the joint actions, operations, and clearing of bandits in the member states would all happen at the same time.
