The Zamfara government has given Matawalle a promise to return luxury cars worth billions of naira
The government of Zamfara state in the north west of Nigeria has given the former governor of the state, Muhammad Bello Matawalle, five days to give his opinion on luxury cars worth billions of naira that were bought from the state government, and they made a mistake.
In a statement issued by the chief assistant to the state governor on media affairs, Sulaiman Bala Idris, he said the new government has received proof of the money allocated for the purchase of luxury cars.
The statement said that the state government has received strong evidence that the former governor has allocated billions of naira to purchase luxury vehicles for the government to use.
However, the statement said that the new government did not get even one car among the cars that the old government said it bought, as the data shows.
Recently, the former governor has been in conflict with the EFCC after he accused the head of the agency, Abdurrasheed Bawa, of committing various types of corruption.
In a statement issued by the EFCC in the past few weeks, it said it is investigating Governor Matawalle for allegedly misappropriating N70bn and awarding contracts illegally.
"The money obtained as a loan from a bank to carry out activities in the local government departments of the state is suspected to have been misappropriated by the governor," according to the EFCC announcement.
In his response, the former governor challenged Bawa to step down from his seat and allow an investigation to be conducted to see what will be revealed.
In an interview with the BBC, Matawalle said, "Investigation is true, it is not forbidden to investigate, but the investigation should be for everyone, because nothing should be said except to mention the governor, right?" The governor is not the only one who has a savings account.”
He said, "As the chairman of the EFCC said that he has kept the documents of the governors, we want him to show the world the documents of those he is working with, and he himself should write a document for himself to be investigated because there are allegations- accuse many people against him."
