Meeting to take steps to resolve conflicts between herdsmen and farmers
Farmers and herders in Nigeria's Jigawa state have started talking about the agreement between the state and the Republic of Niger's Zinder state to keep the peace between farmers and herders who move through parts of both states.
After a three-day meeting in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa state, where people from both Zinder and Jigawa states were present, they talked about how to solve the problems that arise when herdsmen and their animals move around in different parts of the two states and cause problems between herdsmen and farmers.
Alhaji Idris Ya'u Mai Unguwa Jaga, who is the head of the Nigerian Farmers Union's Jigawa state branch and was at the meeting, said that everyone needs to pay close attention to how the agreement package will be put into action to make sure it works.
The herders who liked the deal package said they would tell their people what was in it. Alhaji Adamu Idris Babura, the head of Miyetti Allah in Jigawa state, said that soon they will hold different rallies to tell herdsmen about the benefits of following the rules of the agreement to keep the peace with farmers.
Alhaji Aminu Usman, who is the deputy governor of Jigawa State, signed the deal on behalf of the government of Jigawa State, and Governor Zinder signed on behalf of his government.
Every year, herders and farmers fight in the local governments of Sule-Tankarkar, Maigatari, and Birniwa in Jigawa State. These local governments are on the border of Jigawa State and Zinder State in the Republic of Niger.
